The Ucchista Ganapati Ashtottara Shatanamavali, commonly known as the Ucchista Ganapati Ashtottaram, is a devotional hymn comprising 108 names that extol the various attributes and virtues of Ucchista Ganapati.
oṃ digantavyāptadānāmbusaurabhāya namo namaḥ oṃ
ॐ दिगन्तव्याप्तदानाम्बुसौरभाय नमो नमः ॐ
Salutations to the One whose exudations of fragrant water spread in all directions to the ends of all worlds. The shower of blessings from Lord gaṇeśa extend to all extremities of existential worlds.
Word-by-Word Translation
- oṃ — the primordial sound, the source of all creation
- diganta — the ends of all directions; the farthest boundaries of space
- vyāpta — pervading, filling, extending throughout

Commentary
This verse presents one of the most beautiful metaphors in the Ucchiṣṭa Gaṇapati Ashtastotram. Rather than describing a physical fragrance alone, it depicts the limitless diffusion of divine grace. Just as the fragrance of a flower naturally spreads through the air without discrimination, the blessings of Ucchiṣṭa Gaṇapati extend effortlessly to every realm of existence.
1. The Fragrant Divine Exudation
The word ambu ordinarily means water, but in tantric literature it often refers to sacred fluids, nectar (amṛta), or divine exudations flowing from an enlightened being.
These waters symbolize:
- divine blessings
- compassion
- spiritual nourishment
- the uninterrupted flow of grace
The fragrance (saurabha) indicates that this grace is not merely received—it transforms the very atmosphere around the devotee.
2. Vyāpta – All-Pervading Grace
The word vyāpta means “that which completely pervades.”

Fragrance has long symbolized spiritual excellence in Hindu scriptures.
Just as sandalwood perfumes even the axe that cuts it, the realized being naturally spreads:

As sādhana matures:

In this sense, the devotee gradually reflects the qualities of Gaṇapati Himself.
